Understanding Your MassCOP Benefits

Every day, officers across Massachusetts face legal complexity, public scrutiny, and on-the-job risk. That’s why our membership base is growing. Not because unions are fashionable, but because we deliver concrete, career-preserving value when it matters most.

Legal Defense
One of the cornerstones of MassCOP membership is legal protection. MassCOP members in good standing have 24/7 access to a team of dedicated attorneys that provides protection when it matters most!
MassCOP’s track record shows that we will litigate, settle, and use established labor counsel to defend members.
Unlike some unions that rely on staff representatives (or don’t provide tangible legal support of any kind), MassCOP contracts directly with attorneys. Each Local is assigned two lawyers — a primary and secondary attorney — from Sandulli Grace, PC, a Boston-based firm specializing in labor law and labor relations.
Sandulli Grace brings deep expertise, with 14 dedicated labor attorneys on staff and a long history representing unions like the Boston Police Patrolmen’s Association and the Massachusetts Teachers Association. In addition, MassCOP maintains relationships with several pre-selected labor law firms to ensure coverage and capacity when needed.
The key takeaway for members: when it comes to disciplinary matters, contract enforcement, or broader labor disputes, you’re represented by professionals whose sole focus is labor law, and that representation is included in your dues.
Peer Support and Wellness
MassCOP is proud to run the first state-wide, union-led Peer Support Program in the country, offered exclusively and confidentially to its members. This program is designed to tackle the harsh realities of policing and dispatching, where stress, trauma, and mental health challenges can exact a heavy toll.
Through Peer Support Services, LLC and Lighthouse Health & Wellness, MassCOP members and their families gain access to a wide range of resources:
- 24/7 Critical Incident Hotline (877-MASSCOP)
- Telehealth sessions with licensed clinicians
- Mindfulness, diet, and exercise guidance
- One-on-one sessions tailored to individual needs
- Choice of clinician, including those with public safety expertise
- Lists of trusted treatment centers and wellness providers
The program has recently expanded to include the LEADER MAST Outpatient Clinic at McLean Hospital, which specializes in treating first responders and their spouses. The clinic offers individual, group, and couples therapy, along with medication management for depression, anxiety, trauma, and other challenges.
Why it matters: studies show that PTSD and suicide rates are exponentially higher among officers and dispatchers than in the general population. That’s exactly why our members deserve access to a confidential, comprehensive program built for first responders.
Legislative Advocacy
MassCOP has long been active on Beacon Hill, lobbying for laws that directly affect public safety professionals. When legislation affecting disability pensions, line-of-duty protections, or certification standards come up, MassCOP is at the table representing members’ perspectives.
Our statewide reach gives us leverage in negotiations, legal strategy, and legislative access. These are advantages smaller, isolated locals cannot match on their own. MassCOP’s recent settlement with the POST Commission and its string of legal victories show two important things: (1) the union will take on state-level agencies when laws or procedures threaten members’ rights, and (2) it has legal partners and the organizational capacity to wi
Training and Collective Bargaining Support
The union provides training and collective bargaining classes, giving members tools to better understand their rights and improve their negotiating strength. For Locals, this training can make the difference in securing stronger contract terms and avoiding common pitfalls during negotiations.
Annual Conference and Networking Opportunities
Beyond representation, MassCOP offers a vibrant network of professional and social opportunities. The annual conference brings together members from across the Commonwealth for training sessions, policy updates, and direct engagement with union leadership.
MassCOP also hosts events like its annual golf tournament, which serves as both a fundraiser and a networking opportunity. These gatherings strengthen bonds between officers and dispatchers from different departments while reinforcing the sense of community within the organization.
Member Discounts and Perks
Members receive access to a digital MassCOP ID card, which unlocks various discounts and special offers. While these perks may not rival the core benefits of legal defense and advocacy, they provide extra value in everyday life and underscore the union’s commitment to serving members on multiple levels.
Why These Benefits Matter
For most officers, legal protection is the single most critical benefit, and MassCOP’s partnership with Sandulli Grace ensures that representation is handled by some of the most respected labor attorneys in the state. Combined with legislative advocacy and bargaining support, members know they’re protected on all fronts: from the station to the State House.
Meanwhile, the peer support network, annual conference, and social events like the golf tournament strengthen the bonds between members. These programs help make the union not just a professional resource but a community as well.
The Bottom Line
MassCOP membership offers a comprehensive package: experienced legal defense, wellness support, political advocacy, professional training, and opportunities to connect with peers across Massachusetts. While different unions in the Commonwealth emphasize different priorities, few match the breadth and depth of services MassCOP delivers.
For officers and dispatchers seeking both protection and community, MassCOP continues to set the standard.
